Liposuction is a surgical procedure that can remove excess fat from specific areas of the body, face and neck . Liposuction is common for both men and women of any age who wish to improve their body contour. It may also be used to treat "gynecomastia" or breast enlargement in men.
Although liposuction is not a substitute for diet or exercise, it can permanently alter body proportion and is sometimes the only way to eliminate these fat deposits that are exercise resistant. This procedure is done as an outpatient under general anesthesia.
Several small incisions are made in the area to be suctioned. The tumescent technique is one in which the fat is injected with a saline mixture. The ultrasound assisted technique uses energy from sound waves to liquefy the fat prior to suctioning. Your surgeon will decide which is appropriate for your particular situation. A compression garment will be applied postoperatively. It is important to wear this continuously. Usually within the first week, swelling begins to subside and you can resume nonstrenuous activities. Within several weeks, bruises fade and begin to disappear. You are able to resume exercise and normal activities.
Results from liposuction are noticeable after surgery and become more apparent within a few months, when fluid retention and swelling have subsided. Most patients see the final evidence within three months.
Other areas that may benefit from liposuction include the upper arms, breast or chest area, back, inner knee, calves and ankles.
