Many factors influence aging skin including heredity and gravity along with lifestyle behaviors such as overexposure to sun, alcohol, smoking and poor nutrition. The aging process is inevitable and cannot be changed, but facial plastic surgery can reverse and minimize some of its effects.
Facelift or Rhytidectomy tightens the skin on the face, chin and neck and redefines the jaw line. Incisions are hidden around the ears and hairline as well as under the chin. Excess fat and skin are removed and the muscles tightened.
A facelift may be combined with a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping and skin treatments or laser resurfacing. The procedure is routinely performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. After surgery you will have a bandage wrapped around your face and possibly small drainage tubes beneath the skin.
Dressings are changed the next day and if drains are used, they are usually removed at this time. Suture removal will begin in the first week. Recovery time is minimal. Patients typically return to work within two weeks. Any bruising or swelling that may occur resolves gradually. You may resume your daily activities and exercise after two weeks.
